The Marque
The very first model of what we now all know as 'Mercedes' was produced in 1885 and named 'The Daimler Riding Car, by the Dailmer-Benz company in Germany. In 1897 Emil Jellinek the then well known racing driver and car dealer began his quest to persuade The Daimler Benz company to jointly produce a new and faster engine with him. By 1900 a contract was agreed between the two parties and it was agreed that the engine would be marketed as The Daimler-Mercedes - the latter name being the pseudonym used by Emil Jellinek in the racing fraternity - after his ten year old daughter, Mercedes.
Since 1900 the history of the company and particularly Mercedes has never looked back. By the 1970's Mercedes Benz were producing cars that although very expensive and lacking often in what the factory then saw as gimmicks in terms of specification, the product was recognised certainly amid the motor Trade worldwide as well as by those individuals that owned one, as the very best car on the market. This trend continued until the late 1990's when the by then legendary Mercedes-Benz organistation amalgameted with the even larger Chrysler Corpration of America.
